What is Bollywood you ask? Coined by a journalist in the 1970’s, this term refers to the film industry based in the city of Mumbai, India, which used to be called Bombay.
Bombay + Hollywood = Bollywood!
- India produces far more films annually that attract far greater audience numbers globally than the United States.
- The film industry in India is one year older than Hollywood!
What is the biggest artistic difference between Bollywood and Hollywood?
In one word…“masala”! Masala is a culinary term that means “zesty mixture”. Masala filmmaking combines more than one genre in the same movie (or show), blending elements of comedy, romance, action, and drama. The goal is to appeal to as many people as possible. That way there’s something for everyone in every film – the grandparents, the parents, the teenagers, and the little kids…that makes going to the movies a “family affair”! Hollywood filmmakers take a different approach – they market a super-narrow niche targeting highly specific demographic groups.
Taj Express, the live Bollywood Musical Review, has taken off on their 3-month North American tour that began in New York and ends in California (three stops in Texas…Houston, Dallas and Boerne). The internationally acclaimed musical is a dazzling theatrical spectacular wrapped into 120 minutes of swirling colors, sparkle, shimmer and electrifying energy, which weaves its magic to mesmerize and captivate audiences all over the world.
This musical production lights up the stage with shimmering costumes, fast tempo hits and a Bollywood story unraveled through high energy dance routines which showcase a surge of vibrant footwork and an illustration of emotional rapture. Showcasing the artistry of Indian Classical dance fused with modern Contemporary dance genres, the cast’s energy is electrifying and their dance moves are suffused with a rush of joy and ruthless precision.
Taj Express is a love story between a beautiful actress and a handsome hero of the streets. While they are from opposite worlds, their love of dance brings them together. Travelling on board one of India’s iconic steam engines (The Taj Express), the two escape on a thrilling adventure across this colorful, exotic and magical land. And as with all fairy tales…there will be a happy ending!
So add “masala” to your vocabulary and put some “zest” into your family entertainment. The dazzling sights and sounds of Taj Express will take you on a live journey of India…evoking Bollywood’s rollicking energy and centuries of Indian culture.
So, all aboard! The Taj Express is ready to depart.
